Ty Cobb, one of the game’s first great players, dominated his era with a strong bat, and incredible speed. Known for playing the game with grit and determination, his style of play often went to the edge of the rules, and sometimes, even beyond the rules. He was rumored to have sharpened his cleats before each game so that he could spike his opponents as he slid into a base. Regardless of what you thought of his aggressive tactics, there was no denying his on the field accomplishments. He retired with 4,189 hits, an all time record that stood for fifty years. His 892 career stolen bases were considered the standard of the modern era, and this mark was also not surpassed for fifty years. Here we see the Georgia Peach, in typical fashion, sliding hard into third base in a game at Hilltop Park against the New York Highlanders.

Ty Cobb autographed B&W Hall of Fame plaque. Fabulous green fountain pen ink signature sits on the bottom front border of this Artvue postcard that bears both a 1956 postmark and a typewritten address on the verso. These are getting exceedingly difficult to find and this one's a beauty!

Ty Cobb autographed baseball. Bold, black fountain-pen ink signature by himself on the west panel of an OAL (Ban Johnson) ball. Subtle flaking to Cobb’s autograph downgrades his otherwise exceptionally bold penmanship from a “9” to an “8” on a scale of “1-10.” Ten more signers from the 1922 Tigers--a team that Cobb served on as player/manager--are present and scattered elsewhere, almost as if they deliberately positioned themselves as far away from their fiery skipper as possible and include: Ira Flagstead, Howard Ehmke, E.E. Rigney, Herman Pillette, Larry Woodall, Johnny Bassler, L.A. Blue, George Cutshaw, Clyde Manion, and one other. Signed balls from Cobb’s playing days rarely surface. Here’s a fine example which displays “The Georgia Peach’s” bold script nicely as a single!
