Steve Prefontaine
3x5 signature cut autographed by Steve Prefontaine

Steve Prefontaine boldly signed 3x5. Few will argue that Prefontaine is the greatest American middle-distance runner in history, and this is evident in the fact that two movies have been produced on his brief but storied life. "Pre" was unstoppable on the track and at the height of his career, he held every American track and field record for all distances from 2,000 to 10,000 meters. He was the first athlete to win the same event at the NCAA championships in 4 straight years (5,000 meters from 1970-73); he finished 4th in the 5,000 at the 1972 Munich Olympics; and he holds the distinction of being the first athlete to endorse Nike running shoes. Tragically, he was killed in a one-car accident at the age of 24. The enormous rarity of his autograph in any form cannot be overstated, and he remains on virtually all 'want' lists of collectors from multiple genres. He is perhaps the most widely sought-after 1970's-decade American Sports autograph.
