Christy Mathewson Autographed Autographed Letter
Miscellaneous Item autographed by Christy Mathewson
Christy Mathewson autographed letter with extraordinary provenance. One page ALS, “C. Mathewson”, dated December 23, 1912, just months after he had won his 300th game and written while he was sitting on 312 career wins. An original and well-worn article clipped from a 1912-13 Pueblo, Colorado newspaper tells the story of Boston College student Edwina Vories and explains the provenance of this remarkable collection of related artifacts. The day after playing hooky at her Father’s urging to go and watch his favorite ballplayer--Matty--pitch (and lose) when the Giants came to town to play the Red Sox in that year’s world series, Edwina was summoned to the Dean’s office to explain her unauthorized absence. Upon learning later of his daughter’s troubles, Mr. Vories sent a letter to Mathewson informing him of Edwina’s ordeal. The transcript of that correspondence is reproduced in the newspaper article. In part: “I sent my daughter in Boston a telegram to attend the game to see you. I send the card showing her troubles with the dean on account thereof. I believe the young lady is a fan good enough to deserve your autograph, but if you should send it my second daughter would, no doubt, appropriate it at once….” In response, Matty sent the one-page letter offered here, which reads, in part: "I received a letter from you...which can hardly be answered by saying thank you. So I am just going to autograph your daughters 'card' and enclose it, together with another one of my signatures for your other daughter...." The 6.5” x 5” letter is professionally reinforced in the back along a horizontal crease running in its center on a natural mailing fold and is otherwise NrMT/MINT. Mathewson letters are highly coveted and uncommon.
